The need to feel that we matter is a basic human instinct. It’s more than feeling loved or having a sense of belonging; it means that we are seen as distinctive and unreplaceable. Mattering includes feeling valued and having an opportunity to give value back to the world around us.
In Pastoral Care, the individual receiving support in times of stress or change is recognized as unique and is honored by a listening presence. The individual providing support can give companionship and a non-judgmental ear.
Now, about those times of stress and change. Most people are reluctant to reach out and let people in to our “messy” lives. Opening up to others can bring people closer to us. This is called the “beautiful mess effect.”
The Pastoral Care Team is here for you – find us a coffee hour or contact us at care@uuasheville.org in those times of stress and change. The supporter and the supported matter to each other!
