WELCOME PROJECT 3-D DRAWINGS: (Click on each thumbnail to get a more complete view of each image.)
We are in the very early planning stages of a construction project that will greatly improve the entry/exit and worship experiences for everyone. Primary goals of this project are to 1) allow everyone to participate fully in the life of the congregation, including lighting candles of joys & concern and moving easily from the Sanctuary to Sandburg Hall, 2) create a welcoming presence on the Edwin Place-Charlotte Street corner, including a new sign and repair of window well retaining walls, 3) reduce the extreme bottleneck in the foyer between the Sanctuary and Sandburg Hall, and 4) upgrade the technological systems of the Sanctuary to allow use of current technologies such as video recording/broadcasting and video/slide projection.
These drawings provide conceptual views of the basic ideas. They show the Edwin/Charlotte corner with sign and plaza, an enlarged foyer in both directions, a handicap-accessible entrance from the parking lot and two interior views of the Sanctuary showing how the floor could be raised two steps to allow people with mobility issues to enter without encountering any stairs. For project details, see the Campus Development page.
AWESOME GATHERING AT THE MOUNTAIN: Almost 120 UUCAers (80 adults and 40 kids) spent a glorious November 1-3 weekend at The Mountain (our UU Retreat & Learning Center in Highlands, NC). There were lots of workshops, hikes, field games, archery, high ropes course, low initiatives course, the labyrinth, listening to and playing music, singing at Morning Circle, eating delicious meals, and looking almost 100 miles to the horizon in the Piedmont of South Carolina and star gazing from the top of the lookout tower. We hope you enjoy the pictures and that they will get you excited about next year’s gathering (October 10-12). Be sure to get it on your 2014 calendar today!
