It’s with great pleasure and excitement that the Ministerial Search Committee announces the Dr. Rev. Audette Fulbright Fulson as our candidate for lead minister.
Here are a few things the committee would like you to know about Rev. Audette:
First, she is a deep listener. She is curious about people and asks insightful questions. She connects and engages in meaningful conversation.
Second, Rev. Audette is not just an advocate for intergenerational worship, she advocates for intergenerational congregations. She made the committee pause and think when she asked how our youth are included in decision-making and the work of the congregation because as she says, “children should be both seen and heard”.
And Rev. Audette doesn’t just have a passion for social justice work, it seems to be stitched into her very being. Her knowledge of social justice issues is vast and deep and in her words, “anti-oppression work must be a part of everything we do”.
Let’s see what we can build together!

A special video greeting from Rev. Audette
The Rev. Dr. Audette Fulbright Fulson
Originally from Greenville, SC (where her father and grandparents still live) and ordained in 2001, Rev. Audette has served congregations in the South, in the mid-West, and now in New York City, where she was the first woman ever called directly to the pulpit to serve the 203 year old congregation. A graduate of Starr King School for the Ministry, her ministerial specialties include: the health of congregations, the development of ministers in formation, preaching and writing, social justice and building multigenerational community. She has served in racial justice and conflict resolution work for individuals and communities for over 20 years, and was delighted to perform the first LGBTQ marriage in Wyoming.
With a doctorate in Public Theology from Drew Theological Seminary, where she studied with her mentor the Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis of Middle Collegiate, Rev. Audette has developed an educational and socio-spiritual process called Change Crafting which allows individuals and groups to become dynamic, story-telling change agents while also tending their personal and communal well-being.
Beyond the all-consuming passion of church and public ministry, Audette is married to her love, Rob Fulson, and they are the proud parents of two children, Ember and Mars. Ember is a successful entrepreneur and has been a UU leader in her own right, and Mars is a film student at New York’s Frank Sinatra High School for the Arts. Their family is rounded out by two NYC-sized dogs, Bailey & Dexter, and two very large cat siblings, Blackberry & Pippa.
But beyond the biography, there’s another truth. UU Asheville is the congregation which called Audette into parish ministry. In 1998, she came to UU Asheville as an intern, planning to go into community ministry- prison chaplaincy. Serving the loving and lively community of UU Asheville convinced Audette that the parish was where she should be. Throughout the years since, Asheville and UU Asheville have been tucked in her heart, and the opportunity to rejoin this community as Lead Minister feels like coming home. She’s so excited to meet – or say hello again! – to everyone.
