February 2009

MUUsic in the Afternoon” is here! Our UUCA concert series begins next month on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 4 PM. Three talented members of the Opal Quartet will present a trio concert featuring these works: Serenade, op. 10 by Ernst Dohnanyi; Intermezzo by Zoltan Kodaly; and Trio in G Major, op. 9, no. 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven. Amy Lovinger, a terrific violinist whom many of you know through her appearances at Sunday services, will be joined by Kara Poorbaugh, viola, and Franklin Keel, cello. (Opal’s fourth member, violinist Ginger Kowal, is away at graduate school.) These young musicians are some of Asheville’s most engaging and winning performers. Suggested donation is $10; the one-hour concert will be followed immediately by a Music Committee-sponsored reception. Please mark the date!

The next date to note is Sunday, Mar. 1, when we will host Kate Steinbeck and Amy Brucksch from the acclaimed Keowee Chamber Music Festival. These classically trained musicians will perform an eclectic blend of beautiful music for flute and guitar.

Finally, on Sunday, Apr. 5, we welcome Anne O’Byrne, soprano, accompanied by her husband David Fisk, in an imaginative program of art songs by Handel, Mozart and Debussy; operatic arias by Puccini and Bizet; Irish folk songs; and even some Cole Porter and George Gershwin! Anne is known to many of you through her concerts with the Asheville Choral Society and her appearance here at UUCA in October. Check out the website for more details (www.uuasheville.org.)

Also this month, the Intergenerational (IG) Choir resumes rehearsals for its third appearance of the season, set for Sunday, Mar. 1, “Youth Sunday.” Rehearsals will begin on Sunday, Feb. 1 and run for four weeks from 12:30-1:15 PM in the sanctuary, following services. If you have not yet tried this VERY fun, VERY talented group and would like to do so, contact Lenora Thom at MusicDirector@UUAsheville.org.
