Lenora Thom

Music Director

June 2009

The big news this month is Music Sunday on June 7. Our fabulous Adult Choir will perform a program I’m calling “Celtic Connections – Folk Music of England, Ireland, Scotland and America.” We have 12 charming arrangements: several beautiful melodies such as “Down By the Sally Gardens” (Irish) and “He’s Gone Away” (Appalachian); some rousing tunes such as “The Keel Row” (Scottish) and “The Miller of Dee” (English); and two original compositions by John Jacob Niles (“Go ’Way From My Window,” a heart-breaking depiction of love and loss in the mountains), and by Victor Johnson (“My Heart’s in the Highlands” a true Scottish ‘ballad’ set to poetry by Robert Burns). The choir has been hard at work on this lovely program for a number of weeks now. We will feature guest instrumentalists as well as some of our choir soloists, and I promise you it will be a memorable musical experience. I am so excited about it, and hope you all can attend!

Also, since I last reported to you, the Music Committee has received several more donations for hymnals; as this is an on-going project, we still need your help! You can add your name to this growing list with a gift of just $30, which covers the cost/shipping of Singing the Living Tradition. You will be acknowledged in each hymnal that you purchase. FMI, contact Music Committee Chair Joan Fleisig.

Lastly, both choirs and I will be taking a summer break, resuming in late August. In the meantime, James Richards, Ben Orbach and others will be providing music for services. I hope you all have a fabulous summer, and I’ll see you soon!
