REflections

November 2008

I hope everyone is enjoying the brilliant colors of autumn, the crisp air, and the opportunity this weather brings to focus inward and reflect on internal musings. This time of year we are planning for so many church events and activities, all designed to honor the seasons and share in the joy of community. So come in from the cold and get ready to celebrate together. Some social events call for organizers, leaders and outgoing folks who have a vested interest in creating deeper community among us. We worship together on Sundays, some of us work together in committees, but we need fun memories to help sustain us as a vibrant and supportive community. The RE Committee will help organize intergenerational social events, but we need other leaders to step up and take the reigns. Here are some events that need leadership and energy.

The RE Toy Sale has become a tradition here at UUCA. Children experience the value of giving by bringing their gently used toys in through November. Then, our middle school youth sells the toys to the entire congregation after Sunday services. Our youth have the opportunity to interact with the whole congregation by “manning” the tables, the congregants shop for inexpensive gifts, our kids learn about recycling, and everybody wins! All we need is one person or small group of people to coordinate this toy sale. Could that person be you?

Imagine this scene: It’s a brisk early December evening. A cozy fire warms Sandburg Hall, Christmas music plays on the speakers, the aroma of spiced cider fills the room. Children are lined up at tables making ornaments, decorations, and cookies. In the sanctuary, older kids and adults are working together to decorate our tree and hang garlands. We need one person to help organize this Holiday Decorating event. Maybe we could even sing carols in the neighborhood!   Without that leadership, we won’t be able to gather in celebration and connection with our faith home.

If you are interested in helping to coordinate any of these events, or more, please contact me at DirReligiousEd@UUAsheville.org.
